Meet Javen and John…
Javen has been on the Avenues Supported Living Day Services since 2009, but moved out of his family home and into Supported Living Services slightly over two years ago. John has been with Avenues for the past 6 years. However, John met Scott (Avenues Executive Director) as a teenager and they kept in touch over the years. Javen has a strong work ethic and can be found volunteering for various causes whenever he has a chance. He works two steady part-time jobs as well as seasonal jobs, but still finds time to give back to his community.
John loves to be on the move and interact with people. John found that volunteering was not only a great way to make friends but also a gratifying way to help other non-profits in the community.
Over the years, Javen and John have volunteered together at many organizations throughout the Santa Clarita Valley but they continuously volunteer with Soles4Souls where they pass out flyers to homes for the collection of new and used shoes. They also volunteer at Hart Park and The Placerita Nature Center, helping to keep the parks clean and free of trash and lend a hand with park maintenance or agricultural needs of the parks.
Most Santa Clarita residents know that getting to these locations require quite a bit of travel time which translates into mileage. Since John and Javen don’t drive, their coaches help them get to their volunteer locations on a weekly basis. This requires transportation and fuel that is quite often above and beyond reimbursement. Although they carpool to these locations the mileage adds up. In one week, John and Javen will each travel up to 95 miles for volunteer work.
